Water Damage Restoration in Bergen Beach

Bergen Beach is built on old marsh at the edge of Jamaica Bay, and many houses here have a finished lower level where spilled or flood water settles. We find every spot it reached, dry it to readings, and our own crew rebuilds.

What We Do

Everything we handle on a Bergen Beach water call

Call us about water in a Bergen Beach house and one company handles all of it, from pumping out the first inch to painting the last wall. It includes:

  • Getting the water out. Truck-mounted and portable extraction for standing water, soaked carpet and pad.
  • Finding where it went. Pin and pinless moisture meters plus a thermal camera show us water inside walls, under floors and above ceilings, not just the puddle on the floor.
  • Removing what won't recover. Wet drywall, insulation, baseboard and flooring come out only where our readings say they're wet.
  • Drying to readings. Air movers and dehumidifiers stay in place until framing and slab reach dry numbers.
  • Rebuilding. New drywall, floors, trim and paint from our own rebuild crew.

The inspection and estimate are free. From the call, we're on site usually 30 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on the hour and traffic. Phone 646-543-2242 at any hour.

Start To Finish

One call to a finished room

Every job runs in the same order. What varies is how much gets opened up and how long equipment stays.

  1. First phone call. Say where the water is showing and whether it's still running. If a pipe let go, we'll talk you through finding the shutoff while a crew heads over.
  2. Map the moisture. Readings go onto a sketch of each room, wall by wall. This is the step where water hiding behind finished walls or under laminate turns up, and we go over the sketch with you before anything comes out.
  3. Return visits. A tech comes back for readings and moves equipment where it's needed. Done means the numbers read dry, not a date circled on a calendar.
  4. Rebuild and a final look. The rebuild crew works from the same sketch, so nothing gets measured twice, and we walk the finished rooms with you before calling the job closed.

Old Island, Low Ground

Where the water comes from in Bergen Beach

Brooklyn Community Board 18's Bergen Beach page describes the neighborhood as a former island in Jamaica Bay, mostly meadow at sea level, later tied to the mainland by a bulkhead along its shore. The NYC Parks history of Bergen Beach Playground says the fill joining Bergen Island to Brooklyn was in place by 1918.

So much of Bergen Beach sits on low, filled ground between the bay and Paerdegat Basin. We can't say how any one block behaves in heavy weather, but we know where to look first: the lower level, the garage and the bottom few feet of every wall.

When water came in from outside, under a garage door or up through a floor drain, we treat it as contaminated. More porous material comes out, everything is cleaned before drying begins, and the drying plan is built around that. Our storm and flood cleanup page goes deeper on that work.

The Houses

Newer homes with finished lower levels

Bergen Beach filled in late. NYC Parks notes it was still the largest undeveloped area in Brooklyn into the 1950s, and some blocks near the playground weren't built up until the late 1990s. Community Board 18 says the Georgetowne section grew slowly from the 1960s through the 1980s, mostly one- and two-family homes with some low-rise condominiums.

Houses from those decades often have a lower level finished in drywall, with laminate, vinyl plank or tile over the slab. That shapes how we work:

  • Drywall wicks. We meter it at several heights and cut just above the wet line, not a set number of feet.
  • Floating floors hide water. Laminate and vinyl plank can look fine on top while water sits beneath them, so we check underneath before deciding what stays.
  • Shared walls carry leaks. Where houses are attached, water can cross into the next home, and with the neighbor's OK we read that side too.

Our page on water damage on lower levels goes into more detail.

Owners, Tenants, Boards

When more than one person has a say

A two-family house usually means an owner on one floor and a tenant on the other.

  • We keep owner and tenant both informed and set entry times with whoever lives in the affected unit.
  • In a condominium, the board or managing agent typically decides on work to pipes, shared walls and common areas. We send them our moisture readings so the decision doesn't hold up drying.
  • If the leak started in a neighbor's unit, we trace it back and note where it began.

We run jobs the same way next door in Mill Basin and across Paerdegat Basin in Canarsie.

Until We Get There

A few safe moves while you wait

  • If water is near outlets, cords or the electrical panel, stay out of that room.
  • For a pipe or appliance leak, turn off the valve at the fixture. If you can't find one, shut the main valve where the water line enters the house.
  • Lift rugs, boxes and anything sitting on the floor onto something dry.
  • With outside water, skip household fans and shop vacs. Blowing contaminated water around spreads the problem.

Questions

What Bergen Beach owners ask us

Water came in through the garage at street level. Is the cleanup different from a burst pipe?

Yes. Outside water counts as contaminated, so carpet, pad and the lower part of the drywall usually come out, and everything is cleaned before drying starts. Clean water from a supply line often lets us save more.

I own a two-family and the tenant's floor got wet. Can I call, or does the tenant have to?

Either of you can call. We need access to the unit, and we keep both of you updated on what's wet and what the plan is.

Our lower level has laminate over the slab. Does all of it have to come up?

Not always. Laminate rarely recovers once water gets under it, so it usually comes up. Vinyl plank can sometimes be lifted, dried and relaid. Whatever still has water trapped underneath comes up so the slab can dry.
