Sewer Backup Cleanup

A sewer backup pushes contaminated water up through your lowest drains, and it is a genuine biohazard. We extract it in protective gear, remove what it soaked into, and decontaminate the space to a safe standard.

Backups hit hardest on low-lying blocks served by combined sewers, which covers much of Brooklyn and parts of Queens.

What To Expect

How the sewer backup cleanup process works

A sewer backup is a genuine biohazard, so we extract it in protective gear, remove anything porous it soaked into, decontaminate every surface, and dry the space to a safe standard. We also point you to the likely cause so you can reduce the chance of a repeat.

Where It Starts

The city main or your own line?

Every building has a lateral, the pipe that runs from the house out to the city sewer under the street. In New York, the property owner is responsible for that line all the way to the main. The city is responsible for the main.

It matters because it decides who fixes it and sometimes who pays. If one drain backs up, like a single toilet overflow, the clog is usually close to that fixture. If every drain on the lowest floor backs up at once, the problem is in the main line out of the house or in the city sewer. If it only happens in heavy rain, the city sewer is probably overloaded and pushing back into your building. Along the Red Hook waterfront, that happens with almost every big storm.

Not every backup comes from outside, either. A cracked drain pipe inside the basement can leak sewage for days without a single drain backing up. More on that on our basement sewage page.

Warning Signs

What are the signs a sewer line is about to back up?

  • Several drains running slow at the same time
  • Gurgling from a toilet when the sink or tub drains
  • Water coming up through the floor drain when the washing machine empties
  • A sewage smell near the basement floor drain or cleanout
  • Wet spots or soggy ground over the line in the yard

Any of these means the line is struggling. Call a plumber before it backs up. If it already has, stop using the water and call us.

What should happen after the cleanup?

Clearing a clog with a snake gets the water moving. It does not tell you why it stopped. A camera inspection shows whether there are roots, a crack, a collapse or a sag where waste collects. We note what we see during cleanup and pass it to your plumber.

Questions

Answers before you call

What causes a sewer backup?

Main-line clogs, wipes and other things flushed that shouldn't be, tree roots in old pipes, grease, or heavy rain overwhelming the sewer, especially on low ground. We can point you to the likely cause.

Is it safe to clean it myself?

No. Sewage is a biohazard carrying bacteria and viruses. It needs protective gear and proper decontamination, not a mop.

Who is responsible for the sewer line, me or the city?

In New York, the owner is responsible for the line from the building to the city main, including the part under the sidewalk and street. The city is responsible for the main.

Can I file a claim with the city if the city sewer backed up?

You can file a claim with the NYC Comptroller within 90 days of the damage, and keep the photos and records from the cleanup. We provide our documentation for it.

Your property. Our priority.

Water, fire, mold, or sewage, one call starts the recovery. We show up fast and we do not leave until it is done right.
