Overview
A sewage backup is Category 3 water, a biohazard, and in Queens it shows up in the basements of single-family and multi-family homes when a main line clogs or a storm overwhelms low-lying areas. Toilet overflows, blocked lines, and failed ejector pumps do the rest, across attached homes, two- and three-family houses, and apartment buildings. Basement apartments and South Queens's low-lying blocks get hit hardest. We extract it in protective gear, remove what cannot be saved, and decontaminate to a safe standard.
Most of the backups we clear come down to two things. Baby wipes, including the ones sold as flushable, which do not break down and build up until the line stops. And kids' toys, which go down the toilet more often than anyone wants to admit.
After that it is grease, tree roots in older clay lines, failed ejector pumps in basement bathrooms, and heavy rain overwhelming a line that was already half blocked.
The cause matters. A line that backs up once from wipes will back up again, so clearing the water without clearing the cause only buys you a few weeks. We handle sewer line backups, toilet overflows, and basement sewage backups across single- and multi-family homes.
Before We Arrive
This is the one thing that makes a difference before we get there.
When a basement backs up, people keep going upstairs. Someone runs the dishwasher. Someone starts a load of laundry. Someone flushes. Every one of those pushes more water into a line that already has nowhere to go, and it comes back up in the basement.
Shut the water off at the main if you can reach it. If you cannot, stop using every fixture in the house until we arrive. No sinks, no toilets, no washing machine.
We tell people this on the phone before we leave the shop. It costs nothing, and it is the difference between cleaning up what is already down there and cleaning up twice as much.
How The Job Runs
Category 3 water is not a clean-up-and-dry job. The sequence is set by the IICRC S500 standard, and doing it out of order makes the contamination worse.
Extract first, in full PPE. Nothing else happens until the standing water is out.
Then remove what cannot be saved. Carpet, pad, insulation, and the drywall that took on sewage water all come out before anything gets dried. Contaminated drywall is not dried. Running air movers on it pushes what is in it into the air of the whole house, and it has to come out regardless.
Then clean and decontaminate every surface that is left, with an antimicrobial applied to what remains.
Then dry, and only then. Once the contaminated material is gone, drying the structure is safe, and we monitor it to a measured standard rather than until it looks dry.
Most of an average Queens basement is extracted, stripped and decontaminated in a day. The drying and the rebuild follow from there.
Good to Know
Sewage backups often announce themselves before the visible mess. Watch for several drains running slow at the same time, gurgling sounds from toilets or floor drains when you run water elsewhere, a persistent sewage odor near the lowest level of the home, or water rising around a basement floor drain. Any of these means waste water is struggling to leave the building and may be about to come back in. Catching it early, before it floods a finished basement, is the difference between a contained cleanup and a full gut. If you notice these signs, stop running water and call before it escalates.
