What To Expect

How the black water cleanup process works

Black water is the most contaminated category, carrying bacteria and viruses, so we treat it accordingly: full protective gear, safe removal of porous materials that cannot be saved, antimicrobial treatment of every surface, and drying and sanitizing until the space is safe.

Know The Difference

What is the difference between clean, gray and black water?

The restoration industry sorts water damage into three categories, set by the IICRC S500 standard, and the category decides how the job is done.

  • Category 1, clean water. A supply line or a burst pipe. Most materials can be dried in place if we get there fast.
  • Category 2, gray water. A washing machine or dishwasher overflow. Some contamination, more has to come out.
  • Category 3, black water. Sewage, toilet overflows with waste, and outside flood water. Treated as a biohazard from the first minute. Here is why a sewage backup is a biohazard.

Water also gets worse with time. Clean water that sits for a couple of days in a warm basement can be treated as Category 3 by the time we get there. Storm water that comes up through the floor drain in a Staten Island basement near the shore is Category 3 from the start.

How We Work

How is black water cleaned up safely?

Black water cleanup is done in protective suits, gloves, boots and respirators. The work area is sealed off with plastic, and air from inside it is filtered so contaminated dust does not spread to the rest of the building.

Contaminated material is bagged inside the work area and carried straight out. Nothing gets dragged through the house. Once the porous materials are gone, every remaining surface is cleaned and treated with antimicrobial before drying starts. Drying contaminated material in place only spreads it through the air. The same steps apply to a basement sewage backup or a commercial sewage job.

Questions

Answers before you call

What is black water?

It is Category 3 water, the most contaminated kind, from sewage, backups, or flood water that has picked up contaminants. It is a health hazard and must be handled professionally.

What has to be thrown out?

Porous materials that soaked it up, like carpet, drywall, and pad, usually cannot be saved. We remove those and decontaminate what remains.

Is flood water from a storm considered black water?

Yes. Water that comes in from outside has run through streets and sewers, so it is treated as Category 3.

Can I use bleach to clean black water myself?

Bleach does not get into drywall, carpet or wood, and the contamination does. Those materials have to come out. Doing it without protective gear also puts you at risk.

Your property. Our priority.

Water, fire, mold, or sewage, one call starts the recovery. We show up fast and we do not leave until it is done right.
