Sewage Cleanup

Basement Sewage

Basements take the first hit in a sewage backup because they sit lowest, and what comes up is Category 3 water, a genuine biohazard. We pump it out in protective gear, remove the contaminated materials, decontaminate every surface, and dry the space.

We handle backups in finished basements and garden units across Brooklyn and out to Nassau County.

What To Expect

How the basement sewage process works

Basements take the first hit in a backup because they sit lowest. We pump it out in protective gear, remove the contaminated materials, decontaminate every surface, and dry the space. A backwater valve and keeping grease and wipes out of drains reduce the risk of a repeat.

Easy To Miss

Why is a basement nobody uses the biggest risk?

The worst basement backups are often the slow ones. A cracked drain line in a basement used only for storage, or for the boiler and the laundry once a week, can leak for days before anyone goes downstairs. By then the sewage has spread across the floor, and the humidity from it has soaked into the walls far above where the water reached.

That changes the job. A flood cut a couple of feet up is not enough when the whole wall is damp, and more has to come out. It is also why the sewage smell lingers when wet drywall is left in place. If you have a basement you rarely use, walk through it once a week. Look at the floor near the drains and the boiler, and trust your nose.

What Comes Out

What can be saved after a basement sewage backup?

The rule is simple, because sewage is black water. If it is porous and sewage touched it, it goes. If it is hard and sealed, it can usually be cleaned and disinfected.

Usually removed

  • Carpet and carpet pad
  • Drywall and insulation that got wet
  • Upholstered furniture and mattresses
  • Cardboard boxes and paper
  • Particleboard cabinets and laminate that swelled

Usually saved

  • Concrete floors and block or brick walls
  • Ceramic tile, after cleaning
  • Metal studs and framing
  • Plastic bins and the sealed items inside them
  • Solid wood framing, once cleaned, treated and dried

We photograph and list everything that gets thrown out, so your insurance company sees what was lost.

How do you keep it from happening again?

  • A backwater valve on the main line stops city sewer water from coming back into the house during a sewer backup. A licensed plumber can tell you if one fits your line. NYC DEP recommends them for homes that get sewer backups.
  • A camera inspection of the line shows cracks, roots and sags before they turn into a backup.
  • A check valve on an ejector pump keeps what was pumped out from draining back.
  • Nothing stored on the floor. Shelves and plastic bins save a lot of belongings.
  • No wipes, grease or paper towels down the drains, even the wipes that say flushable.

Questions

Answers before you call

My basement backed up with sewage, what now?

Stay out of it and call us. Sewage is a biohazard; we handle it with the right gear and decontaminate the space so it is safe again.

How do I stop it from happening again?

A backwater valve can help, and keeping grease and wipes out of drains. We will flag the likely cause while we are there.

Can a finished basement be saved after a sewage backup?

The structure, yes. The finishes that soaked up sewage, like carpet, drywall and insulation, usually come out. Once the space is cleaned, treated and dried, it gets rebuilt.

How long until we can use the basement again?

Cleanup and drying usually take about a week. Rebuilding the walls and floors takes longer, depending on how much came out.

Does homeowners insurance cover a basement sewage backup?

Sometimes. Many policies only cover sewer backups if you have a water backup endorsement. A pipe that suddenly breaks inside the house may be handled differently. We document everything either way.

Your property. Our priority.

Water, fire, mold, or sewage, one call starts the recovery. We show up fast and we do not leave until it is done right.
