Sewage Cleanup · Manhattan
High-rise stack backups, commercial sewage, main-line backups, we extract the Category 3 water, decontaminate, and work clean around your building.
Overview
A sewage backup is Category 3 water, a biohazard, and in Manhattan a backed-up stack in a high-rise can push contaminated water into multiple apartments at once. Prewar co-ops with old main lines, street-level commercial and retail spaces, and interior basements all see it when a line clogs or a storm overwhelms the system. We extract it in protective gear, remove porous materials, and decontaminate to a safe standard, coordinating with supers and boards and keeping the work clean in occupied buildings.
Co-ops and Condos
In most Manhattan buildings, the waste stack is a common pipe, and a clog in it backs up into the lowest units on that line. The building usually handles the stack. A clogged stack often shows up first as a toilet overflow in the lowest unit. What happens inside each unit depends on the proprietary lease or the condo bylaws, and on each owner's insurance.
We work with the managing agent, the super and the unit owners at the same time. Every affected unit gets its own photos, moisture readings and scope, so the board and each insurance company can see exactly what happened where.
Grease from a restaurant kitchen is one of the most common reasons a Manhattan line backs up. When it does, it usually hits the business on the ground floor or the cellar below it. We work after hours when we can, so the business loses fewer hours. See our commercial sewage cleanup page.
Older Buildings
Brownstones and walk-ups in Harlem, the Upper West Side, the East Village and Washington Heights often have a cellar with the boiler, the meters and a floor drain. Many still run on original cast iron drain lines and a house trap near the front wall. Cast iron rusts and cracks from the inside, and a clogged house trap backs every drain in the building up to the cellar first.
A cellar backup can also reach the boiler and the electrical. Stay out of standing sewage near either one, and let the building know right away. We extract, remove what is contaminated, treat and dry the cellar, and tell the super or the plumber what we saw on the line. When the cellar is dry, we can rebuild what had to come out.

Good to Know
In a multi-unit building, a sewage backup is rarely just one apartment's problem. A blockage in a shared stack or the building's main line tends to surface in the lowest units first, even when the clog is caused elsewhere. That makes two things important: fast containment so contamination does not spread between units, and clear documentation of what happened and where, since responsibility is often split between the resident, the owner, and the building. We work directly with supers, boards, and management to isolate the affected units, decontaminate properly, and document the loss for whatever claim or cost-sharing follows.

Yes. Most Manhattan buildings require one before work starts, and we can usually have it ready within a couple of hours of confirming the job.
If it came from a toilet, a waste line or the stack, treat it as sewage until it is checked. Keep out of it and call us. We open the ceiling, check what is wet and handle it as a sewage job if it is.
