Mold Remediation · Queens
Basement-apartment mold, bathroom mold, attic mold, we find the moisture and remove the mold safely across Queens.
Overview
Mold follows moisture, and Queens has every setting for it: single-family and attached homes, two- and three-family houses, apartment buildings, and high-rises, plus the humidity and flooding the borough sees. Leaks, poor ventilation, and flooding start mold everywhere, but Queens sees a lot of it in the basement apartments families rely on, in bathrooms of dense multi-family homes, and in attics under leaking roofs. We find the source, contain and remove the mold, and fix what feeds it. You can read how a mold job runs from start to finish before we arrive.
Basement Units
Many Queens families live below the sidewalk. In its report after Hurricane Ida, the City estimated that at least 100,000 New Yorkers live in 50,000 or more illegal basement apartments, and Queens is one of the three boroughs it names as home to most of them.
In the same report, the City found that groundwater seeping into basements and cellars during Ida was mainly a Queens problem. Ida took 13 New Yorkers' lives, and 11 of them were in basement or cellar units.
A basement unit gives mold most of what it needs. The walls touch the ground, the windows are small or high, and the bathroom fan may not vent outside at all.
Add one storm that pushes water through the floor drain, and the bottom of the walls can stay wet for weeks. That is how a lot of mold below grade gets its start.
For a tenant, that's a hard spot. You live with the smell, but the building belongs to someone else.
HPD says to tell the landlord about leaks and mold first. If it isn't fixed, or the work isn't done safely, you can file a complaint online or call 311. Keep your own photos and dates either way.
HPD Classes
HPD sizes mold by square feet, and the size sets the clock. On that same HPD page, mold inside a room of an apartment breaks down like this:
Hallways and common areas use larger thresholds, and the notice of violation states the class.
In a building with 10 or more units, more than 10 square feet of mold also means the owner hires a licensed mold assessor and a separate licensed remediator, independent of each other. All Star does the remediation. The assessor plans the work and checks it when we're done.

Questions
Mold can affect health, especially for sensitive people. We remove it safely under containment; for health concerns, see a doctor.
Yes. We can come out, find the moisture and write down what we see, which gives you a record. The removal itself usually needs the owner's OK, since it's their building. If the landlord won't act, HPD says tenants can file a complaint online or call 311.
Not always. EPA says absorbent materials like ceiling tiles and carpet may have to be thrown away if they become moldy. Hard furniture can often be cleaned, and clothes and bedding that can go through the wash usually can be saved. Photograph anything before it goes out, since renters insurance may ask for it.
One wall usually takes a couple of days of work, plus drying. In a building with 10 or more units, mold over 10 square feet also needs the assessor's plan and clearance, which adds time.
