Water Damage

Moisture Detection

The water you can see is rarely the whole story. It travels along framing, drops between floors, and pools inside wall cavities where a mop never reaches. We map the full extent of the moisture so nothing wet gets sealed up to grow mold later.

What the job involves

  • Infrared thermal imaging
  • Pin and pinless moisture meters
  • Mapping of hidden water paths
  • Checks behind walls, under floors, and above ceilings
  • A clear scope before any demolition
  • Verification readings after drying

Why All Star

  • IICRC-certified technicians
  • NY State mold license
  • Crew with 15+ years of hands-on experience
  • Rated 5.0 across 60+ Google reviews
  • One team from emergency to rebuild

Do You Need This?

Signs and common causes

If any of these sound familiar, call us and we will tell you honestly what you are dealing with.

Signs to watch for

  • A leak you fixed but a lingering damp smell remains
  • Stains that keep spreading or coming back
  • Warm or cold spots on a wall or ceiling
  • Uncertainty about how far a past leak traveled

Common causes

  • Water tracking along framing far from the source
  • Moisture trapped inside wall and ceiling cavities
  • A slow leak that spread before it was noticed
  • Condensation building up out of sight

What To Expect

How moisture detection works

We scan the property with infrared cameras and moisture meters to map every wet area, including the ones behind walls and under floors. You get a clear picture of what is affected before any demolition, so nothing wet gets sealed up to grow mold later. It is usually a same-visit assessment.

The Tools

What each tool tells us

No single tool finds hidden water. Each one answers a different question, and we only trust a wet spot when two of them agree.

  • Thermal camera. It shows surface temperature, not water. A wet wall is usually cooler than the wall around it because the water is evaporating, so it shows up as a cold patch. That's how we decide where to put a meter.
  • Pin meter. Two pins go into the wood or drywall and read the moisture between them. On wood it reads moisture content as a percentage. It leaves two tiny holes, which is why we use it after the camera, not before.
  • Pinless meter. It slides across the surface and reads below it with no holes. It's how we check tile, finished floors and painted plaster without marking them, and how we trace the edge of a wet area fast.
  • Hygrometer. It reads the air, temperature and humidity. It tells us whether the room can dry and how hard the dehumidifiers have to work.

EPA's mold investigation course says moisture meters measure moisture in carpet, wallboard, wood, brick and concrete, and can help locate hidden mold growth. The camera is what gets us to the right spot faster.

In New York, the camera can also mislead. A prewar building with steam heat has riser pipes in the walls that show up hot. An outside wall with no insulation shows up cold in January, so a cold patch near a window may be weather, not water.

That's why every camera hit gets a meter reading before it goes on the map. Once the map is done, structural drying runs until those same spots read dry. When you need the findings on paper, the same tools are behind our water damage inspection, with readings and photos for each room.

Questions

Answers before you call

Why does hidden moisture matter?

Because sealed-up wet materials grow mold within a day or two. Finding every wet pocket now prevents a much bigger problem later.

What do you check when you map moisture?

We start where you see the water, then check the rooms, floors and ceilings around it, because water travels along joists and behind walls. We take readings on dry material too, so there's a number to compare the wet spots against.

Does thermal imaging see through walls?

Not literally. It reads temperature differences that reveal where moisture sits behind surfaces, and we confirm those spots with a moisture meter.

What if you find hidden moisture I did not know about?

Better to find it now. We show you exactly where it is and what it will take to dry it before it becomes a mold problem.

Can you find a leak without opening the wall?

Usually we can narrow it to a small section. The camera and pinless meter show where the wet area starts and which way it spreads, which points to the pipe or fixture feeding it. The plumber still opens the wall to fix it, but only a small spot where the readings point.

Your property. Our priority.

Water, fire, mold, or sewage, one call starts the recovery. We show up fast and we do not leave until it is done right.
